The Environmental Litigation Paralegal role will provide support to EHS and Litigation Counsel and participate in projects with other attorneys across the Law Department. The position handles various substantive areas of law relating to Environmental, Corporate and Commercial matters and requires knowledge of litigation procedures including, preparing responses to requests for discovery involving large document productions.

The candidate will be motivated, creative and result oriented, and will be able to independently follow through to task or project completion.  This work requires exercising considerable independent judgment and initiative in developing procedures, managing competing priorities and obtaining objectives.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Research a wide variety of domestic and foreign legal, environmental, and business issues.
  • Assist in responding to government requests for information through file and database reviews and possible interviews with present and past employees.
  • Work with in-house and/or outside counsel preparing responses to requests for discovery.
  • Assemble information and prepare draft of annual corporate responsibility (compliance certification) and reports on environmental and health & safety compliance.
  • Maintain database of environmental sites.
  • Manage and track PRP sites, including participating in status conference calls, possibly attending PRP meetings and providing reports to in-house counsel.
  • Assist in maintaining document management system, especially the Environmental section.
  • Draft legal documents ranging from contractual agreements to resolutions regarding real estate or corporate housekeeping matters.
  • Review and transmittal of service of process & assistance with legal holds and evidence collection
  • Discovery tasks in complex litigation, including deposition coordination, witness interviews, and written discovery
  • Analyzing and resolving small claims. Drafting settlement agreements
  • Support the annual audit process, e-billing issues, and cost tracking of projects to budget.
  • Support other legal matters as assigned, particularly M & A and other transactional matters
  • Occasional travel may be requested to site locations for corporate records inspection and/or training.

 

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Paralegal Certificate from an ABA approved institution a plus.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years paralegal experience in a legal environment with a law firm or corporation.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a working understanding of substantive areas of law relating to Corporate and Commercial matters.
  • Well-versed in contract law and in office practices and procedures applicable to contract law
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with outstanding process documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate needs and priorities of originators and initiate and coordinate the required actions of others.
  • Exhibit an eagerness to learn new skills and resourcefulness in solving problems.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain strict levels of confidentiality.
  • Strong general computer skills, including intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office business software (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and Internet usage.
