The R&D Project Leader typically does not have direct reports and therefore must be able to effectively manage through influence, communication, and negotiation.

The R&D Project Leader will work through a cross-functional project leadership team.  The core team members lead functional teams to assure project deliverables meet technical, timeline, and financial deliverables.

The R&D Project Leader exercises judgment within broadly defined best practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.  They also perform duties independently, with minimal direction, and are expected to give direction/guidance across the business.  Additionally, they work on complex problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data require an in-depth evaluation of various factors and a high level of business sophistication.

The R&D Project Leader is accountable to lead the team and to develop a current year and future years project budget and forecast updates.  The leader will collaborate with Global Strategic Marketing to assemble business case and project valuation while guiding the team to achieving technical milestones and managing the program through a governance process.  He or she will objectively represent the program to business leadership.

The R&D Project Leader is accountable to follow the defined new product development process and ensure a consistent data set for the assigned projects including:  a project plan inclusive of key activities and key milestones, a risk-adjusted business case, commercial assumptions, technical assumptions, risks, a commercial launch plan, and post-launch documentation.

The Project Leader has broad exposure to functional areas within and outside of R&D, including all R&D functional disciplines, R&D Leadership, Global Strategy Marketing, Global Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Procurement, and the Executive Leadership Team.

Key activities include:

Lead project teams from late stage Discovery to Commercial launch for new proprietary active ingredients
Translate project targets into research plans by working closely with the core and extended teams
Ensure timely updates to program milestones, valuation, and risks, and work with various stakeholders in preparing scenario analysis
Develop and update 5-year plans and a long range 15-year plan using specified Project Planning tools
Plan and review annual budgets and monthly forecasts
Responsible for assembling all key decision-making information and assumptions
Presents project updates to executive leadership and governing bodies for continued funding and advancement
Identify and escalate critical issues that require immediate action
Convey to R&D organization an understanding of a project’s market opportunity, competitive landscape, and business impact
Organize end of program final review and manage hand-over to “manage existing business” associates.  Documents learning experiences.
