FMC Agricultural Solutions has an immediate opening for an R&D Scientist/Engineer in Applications Technology with strong engineering background and solid product application technology experience. The successful candidate will join the Application Technology group located at the FMC Stine R&D center in Newark, DE. 

 

This position requires applying engineering knowledge to innovate and provide solutions that improve the delivery of crop protection. The R&D Scientist/Engineer in Applications Technology will translate highly technical ideas into final product design and develop novel engineering technologies integrated with crop protection products to optimize product application and compatibility. Understanding of global farming and working experience with growers are required.  Successful applicant will also have strong theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in one or more areas, including automation and control systems, agricultural machinery, product dispensing and delivery, and advanced engineering modeling. Successful candidate will be responsible for supporting in-house innovation of application technology. This position requires a multidisciplinary approach and a person who can perform conceptual design, experimental validation, commercial development. The engineer will work within a collaborative team consisting of project managers, biologists, chemists, formulation scientists, regulatory staffs, field development reps, marketing and sales.

 

Responsbilities: 

  • Support the design, development and validation of customized application equipment and techniques to optimize the application quality of FMC product and support in-house innovation.
  • Interface with the cross-functional teams to ensure product application efficacy and quality across a variety of application, handling, storage and packaging systems;
  • Evaluate product compatibility with commercial equipment designed for foliar and soil applications for crop enhancement as well as weed, disease, nematode, and insect control etc.; develop new testing procedures to better characterize FMC products’ interaction with farming machinery; translate key learnings for product development, formulation improvement, and material transfer;
  • Use and develop sensing and digital technology, automated control platform, and modeling approach to enhance fluidics, application reliability, delivery accuracy & performance relevant to crop protection products.
  • Perform custom-engineering design for product transferring and handling system based upon FMC products’ attributes and customer needs.
  • Provide urgent customer support and technical assistance to business leaders, sales & marketing reps, field development reps, growers and related farm cooperatives;
  • Track global Ag Industry technology trends, familiarity with relevant standards (ASABE, ISO, and ASTM etc.), and ability to networking with internal and external experts and stakeholders; identify and champion potential opportunities to enhance FMC’s business and provide value to our customers.
  • Be able to travel both domestically and internationally when needed.

 

Requried Education:

  • PhD in Agricultural, Biological System, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or Master of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Agricultural Engineering with 5-10 years experiences in an agricultural business, working experiences in application technology is strongly desired

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with equipment prototyping, spray and atomization,  testing for electromechanical systems, ag. robotic, hydraulic systems, dispensing systems, automation and controller building and troubleshooting;
  • Established connections with key external experts and global professionals are strongly preferred;
  • Good working knowledge of products formulations and delivery systems;
  • Knowledge of automation, controller design, telemetry & sensing technology commonly in use on current farming equipment and associated digital data platforms.
  • Strong desire to commercialize technology and a result-oriented mentality;
  • Strong technical understandings and application of engineering principles with hands-on skills;
  • Experience with process control system and strong programming skills with C++, Python, MATLAB® etc.;
  • Excellent project management, planning, prioritization and leadership skills;
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills across functions and disciplines
