Business/Function Overview:

The Field Station Development Representative (FSDR) manages and implements a field-testing program primarily at an FMC research farm located in Madera California. The Field Station Development Representative is actively involved in a broad range of work activities, spanning early-stage lead optimization and venture qualification research, commercial product development, sales support demonstrations and providing technical information for commercial products. This position reports to the US Field Development Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct high quality in-house field tests for insecticide, fungicide, and herbicides
  • Responsible for planning, planting, managing, harvesting, and processing research plots per project protocol
  • Plan space allocations between Discovery, Development and Tech Service and works with field station biologists in programming for all crop-related research actives
  • Partner with the other Field Station Development Representative for responsibility regarding fiscal budget development and expenditures
  • Develop action plans and budgets that meet technical and operational objectives while managing time and priorities in an independent work environment
  • Meet with Field Station Development Representative counterpart  to discuss, plan and coordinate on-going or proposed projects in order to define tasks, personnel, equipment and supplies needed, scheduling, and methodology to avoid conflicts and resolve problems; recommends changes or modifications or experiments to save time, money and effort
  • Supervise crew of interns and contractors that assist with the operation of the farm and field research
  • Conduct monthly safety inspections of facilities and equipment and ensuring adherence to FMC safety standards at all time at the research station
  • Purchases supplies, equipment, tools and repairs; sees that crops are cared for on a scheduled basis.
  • Assist with the oversite of facility maintenance (offices, shop, lab and grounds)
  • Ensure that all activities meet local, state, and Federal regulations and laws, including safe storage, shipping, handling and application of EPA-approved and experimental agricultural products
  • Work closely with local tech service managers to build strong team relationships with key university research specialist and other industry influencers
  • Work hand in hand with Technical Service group to ensure that TSMs are well educated regarding development projects and prepared to superbly execute technical strategies for support of product launch and assist with plot tours at the farm for internal and external audiences
  • Represent FMC at industry events such as media summits, trade shows and regional and national scientific gatherings
  • Maintain strong technical knowledge of commercial, new chemistries & other technology impacting the business
  • Help identify and recruit potential new employees for sales, technical service and product development positions
  • Help train and mentor new employees
  • Provide input and participate with marketing, sales and tech service as needed on market intelligence and business opportunities in local territory

Required Education:

  • MS or Ph.D. in Entomology, Plant Pathology, Weed Science, Plant Science, Agronomy or other agricultural/related science.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience in discovery, development and commercialization of agricultural products
  • 2+ years of experience in research farming or in general farm management with basic knowledge of a farming operation including cultural practices around ground prep, equipment setup, cultivating, irrigation, planting, spraying and fertilizing the crops grown at the station.
  • Competency working with specialty crops (leafy and fruiting vegetables, nut and fruit trees, and vines)
  • Working knowledge of disease, insect and weed biology and appropriate field-testing procedures and an ability to work with research biologist in making biological evaluations as needed
  • Knowledge of agricultural cropping systems, pests, practices and products and basic farm machinery operation and maintenance skills
  • Experience in field plot technique and statistical analysis of data
  • State pesticide application license required (QAL*/QAC).  Possess or be working toward a Pest Control Advisors (PCA) License and/or Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) certification and maintain certification through continuing education hours.
  • Strong organizational and attention to detail skills
  • Ability to get results by delivering on commitments and implementing plans and programs
  • Excellent computer skills (proficient in Microsoft Office applications)
  • Ability to speak, read and write in English
  • Bilingual English/Spanish helpful, but not required
  • Ability to manage time and priorities in an independent work environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork and collaborative cooperation
  • Ability to communicate to a wide variety of internal and external audiences in a way that promotes understanding and builds relationships
  • Commitment to safe driving practices, chemical handling and use of equipment

  • Ability to carry a 50 lb. backpack sprayer on uneven ground
  • Ability to work seasonal weekend and/or evening hours in conjunction with farming activities
