Business/Function Overview

FMC is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to assist with data and quality management activities around R&D data. The Data Specialist is responsible for standardizing the use of terms and parameters in existing R&D experimental methodology.  In addition, the specialist will assist in determining how best to store final data points from the research study in a database, such that the data that can be queried and analyzed.  This individual works closely with researchers generating or receiving this data.  The goal is to ensure that high quality data is generated and captured in a timely manner to enable R&D to make critical decisions.  This individual is part of a data management team that overseas applications used to plan, enter, record, retrieve, and analyze data. 


Below is a list of some of the selected responsibilities the successful candidate will have:

  • Standardization of Terminology – Work with researchers to determine which parameters are critical to record and how best to standardize nomenclature for these parameters.
  • Standardize Processes – Convert a process where Excel is used as a template / repository for the final data source to a template that can be archived in a database.  This may involve consolidation multiple methods that a team is using and may also require the use of an Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN).
  • Data Curation – Extract and curate key data from Excel and pdf files that represents crucial final data points that can be queried and analyzed.  How to best use internal applications for planning and recording data.  Provide detailed assistance on transferring trial data files so they can be published into a custom database.
  • Training and Troubleshooting – Ability to help others understand how to use custom applications, by providing training material, giving presentations, and individual discussions.
  • Application Owner – Responsible for application(s) working as expected, troubleshooting, maintaining a backlog for additional enhancements, and granting access to users.
  • Project Owner – Oversee planning and execution of small projects, typically a proof of concept for a new, more complicated enhancement, related to one of our applications.


Required Education

  • B.S. in Agriculture, Biology, a related Life-Science



  • Experience working with data, experimental methodology, and databases, especially as related to biological field trials.
  • Very strong computer skills, especially excel.  Knowledge of custom applications (e.g., Electronic Laboratory Notebooks, VB, SQL, statistical software)
  • Ability to manage the activities of others and provide effective coaching and counseling
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills and comfortable leading training face-to-face and over the internet
  • Ability to manage time and priorities in an independent work environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork and collaborative cooperation
  • Strong organizational and attention to detail skills
