The Global Development Field Biology Internship position is a unique and immersive opportunity to engage Undergraduate students in hands-on agricultural biology research. As part of the Global Development Biology Agricultural Research Station team, the interns will be collaborating with team members to deliver timely, high-quality field-testing results. Interns will have the opportunity to work with a variety of agricultural chemicals including early discovery, development, and commercial pesticides and biologicals. These agrochemicals will be targeting plant pests and pathogens with solutions including insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and nematicides. Interns will support field research, laboratory/greenhouse assays, prepare chemicals for treatment, and perform field maintenance operations that will provide opportunities to train with small plot and large field equipment.

 

This opportunity is located at Stine Research Center in Newark, Delaware.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Research Station Biologists to support field, greenhouse, and laboratory research
  • Work in the field to support station and research needs performing a variety of labor and research activities
  • Assist in establishing field trials including area planning, planting, maintenance, and scouting to ensure delivery of high-quality trials
  • Safely handle and apply agriculture and experimental chemicals including non-registered and EPA registered pesticides and biological organisms
  • Following training and with guidance, operate trial and farm equipment and machinery including research sprayers, tractors, lawn mowers, and others as necessary
  • Provide trial specific support including maintenance, treatment applications, data collection, and harvesting
  • Collaborate with the Research Station Team to prepare timely trial reports which describe observations and results
  • Provide support as needed to the Research Station to ensure the facilities and equipment are in safe working order and all operations meet the standards set forth by the Corporate and Global R&D organization

 

Qualifications:

  • Interest in agriculture, plant and pest biology, and crop management
  • Experience in field operations and greenhouse is a plus
  • Working knowledge of agronomic row, fruit, and vegetable crops is of value
  • Experience in scientific (field/laboratory) research is of value
  • Strong organization skills and close attention to detail
  • Ability to manage time and priorities in an independent work environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork and collaborative cooperation
